Ladies Serve up a Goal Feast in the Inter-provincial Cup.

Ulster/ Connaught 6-15 Munster/Leinster 5-15

New York Ladies Railway cup followed the Connaught Championship game on Sunday in Gaelic Park and those who stayed to watch the game were treated to a brilliant exhibition of football played at a fast pace with end to end action. Munster/Leinster found themselves short on numbers but with the high concentration of Ulster footballers here in New York the panels were divided to ensure a good game.

Munster/Leinster opened up the scoring with a point from Sue Bennett who had a great game scoring most for them. Emma Clarke replied with a well taken goal with Denise Dunnion quickly adding another goal to put Ulster Connaught in front. Pamela McNally tagged on a point for Munster Leinster with Sue Bennett adding on 1-2 before Denise Dunnion scored 0-2. Bennett added another but Ulster/Connaught went on a scoring spree with Ciara Moore adding another goal, Anita McKenna scored a point and Joanne McKenna adding 1-4 unanswered. Sue Bennett settled the nerves by adding another goal for Munster/Leinster with Denise Dunnion scoring the final point of the half to leave Ulster/Connaught with a comfortable lead at the break 4-8 to 2-5.

The second half started as the first with Sue Bennett once again opening the scoring with Linda McKeon and Mary Maguire adding points. Nicola King and Ciara Moore once again pointed for Ulster/Connaught before they went 15 minutes without a score. Sue Bennett was on fire and 1-4 to leave her team only one point in arrears. Denise Dunnion settled the nerves scoring a great goal for Ulster/Connaught but Stephanie Tierney and Linda McKeon tagged on points before Katrina Coyle put Munster/Leinster ahead with a goal. Ulster/ Connaught re-organized and had points from Aisling McCabe, Denise Dunnion 0-2 Ciara Moore 0-1 and a goal by Caroline Murphy. Sue Bennett tagged on another goal but the final scores fell to Denise Dunnion and Rosie O’Reilly both hitting points to leave Ulster/Connaught victorious and Denise Dunnion picked up the John Dunican Memorial cup.

A few years ago this competition was almost scrapped due to lack of interest but with a kit for all the players taking part and playing the game in Gaelic Park it certainly has brought new life into the competition. The players played with passion ensuring a very entertaining game. Despite the number of goals both goalkeepers were magnificent on the day with Nora McGrail who was awarded MVP of the game pulling off great saves to deny Munster/Leinster and Jeanine Heinsohn denying Ulster/Connaught on many occasions. This was a good clean game with minimal fouling and a great advertisement for Ladies football. This all bodes well for the New York County team who this year have been chosen to be part of “the underdogs” series a TV show on TG4 in Ireland where players with no senior Inter-county experience are picked on a panel. This team will travel and play New York in Gaelic Park in November and given the talent on display on Sunday, New York will be tough opposition on the day.

New York U-14 1-7 Philadelphia U-14 0-0

Earlier in the day the New York Feile girl’s team played the Philadelphia Feile team making history playing the first game on the new surface in Gaelic Park. Both teams found it tough going with the sheer size of the field a factor but New York always looked the stronger team however Philadelphia were strong defensively making life difficult for the New York forwards. Courtney Traynor put her name in the history books scoring the first point. Brianna Tierney added the second from a free however after that both defenses played there part denying any attempts to score. Ashley Callery (Captain) Christina Brown and Noelle Brophy cleaned up everything that came there way with Mairead Hynes strong in goals. Molly Boyle and Margaret Moore in midfield supplied ball into the forward line in which Courtney Traynor, Katie McEvoy and Brianna Tierney worked hard. Philadelphia goalkeeper Megan Callaghan made a fantastic save to deny New York a goal but Caitlin Hynes who came on midway through the half launched a high ball into the goal area which bounced over into the back of the net to leave New York ahead 1-2 to 0-0 at the half.

In the second half Molly Boyle opened up the scoring for New York with a well taken point after a run from Midfield. Nicole McEneaney added another point and Brianna Tierney converted another free. Sinead and Siobhan Kiely and Michelle Bogs all tried hard to deny New York with Brianna McGrory playing well in midfield. They had a few scoring chances but were denied by the crossbar and some fine goalkeeping. Courtney Traynor added another point for New York with Katie McEvoy adding the final point for a successful outing for the New York girls.

The New York panel of 24 have some very talented players and have been training hard since March for their trip to Leitrim where they will be hosted by the Sean O’Heslin’s GFC in Ballinamore. In Courtney Traynor they have a hard working forward who demonstrates speed and agility on the ball partnered by players like Brianna Tierney, Katie McEvoy, Kelly McCormack, Andrea McGlade and Megan Santini; they will be a tough opposition to any back line. Caitlin Hynes is a strong midfielder but both Molly Boyle and Margaret Moore played well today and the defensive unit both starting and off the bench were second to none. Christina Brown continues to improve with Ashley Callery very strong in the full back position. Amanda McGovern, Noelle Brophy, Bridget Mulligan and Teresa Daly all shone with Laura O’Sullivan, Kerry Holland, Johanna Levine, Kathryn Shea and Nora Kilkenny all playing their part when introduced leaving difficult decisions ahead for manager Kieran Traynor and selectors Rosie O’Reilly and Anne Holland.

New York: M.Hynes, C. Brown, A. Callery, T. Daly, A. McGovern, N. Brophy, B. Mulligan, M. Boyle (0-1), M. Moore, B. Tierney (0-2), C. Traynor (0-2), K. McEvoy (0-1), K. McCormack, M. Santini, A. McGlade. Subs: K. Shea, K. Holland, C. Hynes (1-0), N. McEneaney (0-1), N. Kilkenny, J. Levine. (Missing: D. McGurk, N. Diminno)

Philadelphia: M. Callaghan, S. Kiely, S. Kiely, J. Panas, R. Coyle, M. Bogs, B. Peis, K. Morrucci, B. McGrory, S. Burke, K. Flanagan, C. Traves, E. Story, A. Myles, F. Bradley.
